DeKalb County Public Library Celebrates Black History Month

Pro­grams will focus on civ­il rights, cul­ture and media literacy.

DECATUR, Ga. — (Jan. 29, 2026) — DeKalb Coun­ty Pub­lic Library will host more than 20 pro­grams for Black His­to­ry Month. Events will take place at sev­er­al library branch­es through­out Feb­ru­ary. The 2026 sched­ule includes his­tor­i­cal pre­sen­ta­tions, exhibits, crafts, films and more.

We’re excit­ed to bring such a wide range of pro­grams to our branch­es this year,” said Ali­son Weissinger, direc­tor of DeKalb Coun­ty Pub­lic Library. This line­up pro­vides a won­der­ful oppor­tu­ni­ty for the com­mu­ni­ty to gath­er and explore sto­ries of lead­er­ship and creativity.”

Some of the pro­gram high­lights include:

  • 250 Years of African Amer­i­can His­to­ry: Exhi­bi­tion Open­ing and Con­ver­sa­tion with Mike Glenn — Glenn will open the exhi­bi­tion of his curat­ed col­lec­tion of his­tor­i­cal doc­u­ments, peri­od­i­cals, and pho­tographs on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Decatur Library. The exhi­bi­tion will remain on dis­play in the library’s Fourth Floor Gallery through Feb. 28 on Thurs­days, Fri­days, and Sat­ur­days from 1 to 5 p.m. This pro­gram is held in con­junc­tion with the Geor­gia Cen­ter for the Book.
  • Unlock­ing His­to­ry with the Nation­al Cen­ter for Civ­il and Human Rights (NCCHR) — NCCHR will present a ses­sion on the lead­er­ship of Black women dur­ing the Mont­gomery Bus Boy­cott. This pro­gram includes an activ­i­ty that rais­es aware­ness of media lit­er­a­cy using pri­ma­ry sources and archival mate­ri­als. It will take place on Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Scott Can­dler Library.
  • Dr. King’s Unsung Heroes and Today’s Mis­sion — His­to­ri­an Der­ic Gilliard will dis­cuss civ­il rights his­to­ry and share insights from his dis­tin­guished career and books. Pro­grams are sched­uled for Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. at the Hair­ston Cross­ing Library and Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Stonecrest Library.
  • Pot­tery with Ellen Gad­ber­ry (Ages 6 – 12) — Chil­dren will learn about poet and artist David Drake and sculpt pinch pots on Feb. 21 at 2:30 p.m. at the Stone Moun­tain-Sue Kel­logg Library.
  • Hat­ti­tude: African Amer­i­can Hat Cul­ture — Par­tic­i­pants will explore the cul­tur­al sig­nif­i­cance of head­wear in the African Amer­i­can com­mu­ni­ty on Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. at the North­lake-Bar­bara Loar Library.
