The Clarkston Library was established in 1991 on the site of the former neighborhood high school. In a powerful display of community spirit, local residents were invited by the City of Clarkston to help demolish the old school building, paving the way (both symbolically and literally) for a new chapter in the heart of the city.
Since opening its doors, the Clarkston Library has been deeply committed to serving its vibrant and diverse community. Through thoughtfully curated materials, inclusive programs, and a welcoming environment, the library continues to evolve alongside its patrons, remaining a trusted and essential resource for learning, connection, and cultural enrichment.
In April 2024, a mural was painted on three outer walls of the Clarkston branch. Sponsored by Alif Institute and created by contemporary artist eL Seed, the mural reflects both the library and the diversity of the Clarkston community. eL Seed chose the quote “Genius everywhere is one” from The Book of Khalid by Ameen Rihani, the first English-language novel by an Arab American writer. The vibrant artwork features eL Seed’s signature “calligraffiti” style, Arabic calligraphy blended with graffiti, often incorporating quotes or poetry.
