Older Americans Month 2024

DeKalb County Public Library (DCPL) is pleased to announce its lineup of programs for Older Americans Month (OAM). The theme, Powered by Connection,” highlights the profound impact that meaningful connections have on the well-being of older adults. The theme was chosen by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), a federal agency.

Seniors are some of our most treasured library patrons, and many of them have been visiting DCPL for decades,” said Myguail Chappel, branch supervisor for Library Take-Out Services, DeKalb County Public Library. They tell us that the library is an important part of their social infrastructure, and we want to let all seniors know we are here to support them. Honoring them each May during Older Americans Month is one of the ways we do that.”

This year, the library is bringing back its popular senior talent and variety show. The event takes place on May 22, 2024 at Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center during the library’s annual OAM celebration. Event registration is required.

The library is also using this opportunity to highlight its SeniorCONNECT program for homebound people, age 55 and up. The program aims to decrease social isolation and loneliness by providing library resources and support such as book discussions, technical assistance, and access to virtual programs.

The guide to all OAM programs may be downloaded here or viewed below. Programs are offered free of charge, though some require registration.

Established in 1963, Older Americans Month is celebrated every May. OAM is a time to recognize older Americans’ contributions, highlight aging trends and reaffirm commitments to serving the older adults in our communities.
