STAY HOME

and Support the Take the Internet Home with You Initiative

There’s no place like home!  While we love seeing your smiling faces at A Novel Affair:  Tapas+Trivia, this year we invite you to show your support from the comfort of your own home.  Please think about what you are not spending on a formal event and consider making a donation to support the Take the Internet Home with You initiative.

The Take the Internet Home with You initiative was launched in 2017 as an effort to bridge the digital divide for DeKalb County citizens who may not have home internet access. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed just how vast the digital gap is in our community. According to the US Census Bureau's COVID-19 Impact Planning Report, 16.9% of DeKalb County citizens do not have home internet. And, data from censushardtocountmaps2020.us indicates there are many areas in DeKalb County where this figure is as high as 30%.

The Take the Internet Home with You Initiative allows a patron to check-out a hotspot device so that they may access the internet in their home for 21 days.  Patrons have reported back that they need this service now more than ever so that they can stay connected to school resources, file unemployment paperwork, search for jobs, and to remain connected to the world around them.

I am a teacher who does not have internet at home. The hotspot allowed me to continue to teach my classes. I was able to keep it long enough to save enough money to purchase one for myself. I have always loved the library, and I will continue to sing your praises — especially to my students!
—Julie C.

I’m able to stay connected to friends, file unemployment claims, and stream movies.  What was once considered a pleasure is now a blessing.
—William

We used the hotspot for my son’s school. I don’t know what we would have done if we didn’t have it.

The DeKalb Library Foundation is focusing its fundraising efforts on supporting this initiative as this is the greatest service we can provide the community until the library buildings are able to open to the public again.

Any donation is appreciated.  Amounts below contribute to the long-term success of the program:
$1,000 will sponsor service for 1 hotspot for 2 years
$500 will sponsor service for 1 hotspot for 1 year
$250 will sponsor service for 1 hotspot for six months

To participate, please make your contribution by September 30, 2020.

Thank you for your generosity.
